Adults Only Ghost Tours in Flagstaff: The 18+ and 21+ Guide

By the Freaky Foot Tours research deskFlagstaff, Arizona ยท Researched and checked against the record ยท Updated July 2026FlagstaffPlanning Guides

Flagstaff runs two evening walks built for grown-ups. Mountain Town of Madness is the 18+ version of Flagstaff's original ghost tour, $39 on Friday and Saturday nights at 9 PM, and Spirits With The Spirits is the 21+ haunted pub crawl, two hours and three historic bar stops, now offered as a private booking for groups. Here is what separates the two, and why some of these stories carry an age line in the first place.

Downtown Flagstaff after dark on the adults-only ghost tour route

What is Mountain Town of Madness?

The 18+ version of Flagstaff's original ghost tour, running Friday and Saturday at 9 PM for $39. It starts later, when the streets have gone quiet, and it goes further than the family walk: past the Orpheum, the Weatherford, and the Hotel Monte Vista, then on to the stops the 7 PM tour never reaches, including the Coconino County Superior Court, Crystal Magic, and the public library, where the reports involve flying books and worse. Some stories are saved for this tour alone. That is the point of it.

Why are some Flagstaff ghost stories 18 and up?

Because the record is dark without any dressing up. Three cases set the tone.

The Walkup tragedy, told in full. The family tour handles the summer 1937 case with restraint: Marie Walkup took the lives of her four children and then her own, and the case marked Flagstaff so deeply that co-founder Susan Johnson researched it for years and wrote The Walkup Family Murders. Mountain Town of Madness does not trim it. The full telling is heavy, and it belongs in front of adults. Start with the Walkup family story if you want the history first.

The trial with the impossible defense. At the courthouse stop, the tour covers the 1988 trial of George Abbott for the murder of Sarah Saganitso, in which the skinwalker defense prevailed and a man walked free. It is true crime with no comfortable ending, and the guide presents the record as the record.

The shop that drew the television crews. Crystal Magic's basement activity brought Travel Channel's The Dead Files to Flagstaff in 2022, and the team researched those cases before the cameras ever rolled. The versions told on this walk are the ones that did not fit a family evening. Our post on when The Dead Files came to Flagstaff covers how that episode happened.

What is Spirits With The Spirits?

The 21+ haunted pub crawl: two hours, three historic downtown bar stops, drinks not included, now run as a private booking with pricing quoted per group. The format is simple. Settle in somewhere with a body of history, order what you like, and hear what happened between these walls: the bank robber who bled out over one last drink in the Monte Vista cocktail lounge in the 1970s, the White Lady who still holds the Weatherford's Zane Grey Ballroom. The spirits are on the itinerary either way.

Which adult tour should you pick?

Pick by the night you want. If you want the deep cuts, the courtroom cases, and the full weight of the archives, take Mountain Town of Madness. If you want the stories paced across three historic bars with a drink in hand, take the pub crawl. Groups split on this constantly, which is why plenty of guests pair them across a weekend: the crawl one night, the 9 PM walk the other.

What should you know before you book?

  • Flagstaff sits near 7,000 feet, and by 9 PM the temperature has usually made its point. Bring layers, even in July.
  • Both walks cover downtown sidewalk at an easy pace. Comfortable shoes carry the night.
  • Flagstaff guides Revel the Devil, Michelle de los Muertos, and Steve "The Heathen" lead these routes, and each brings a different flavor to the same dark record.
  • The stories are researched, not scripted theater. Expect court records and newspaper archives, not costumes.

Questions people ask

Is Mountain Town of Madness just the family tour at a later hour?

No. It shares a city and a few characters with the 7 PM walk, then adds stops the family route never visits and tells the shared cases in full. Guests who have done both report a different tour, not a darker copy.

Are drinks included on the pub crawl?

No. Your group's quote covers the guide, the route, and two hours of stories across three historic bars. What you drink at each stop is your own tab, and nobody is required to drink at all.

When do the adults-only tours run?

Mountain Town of Madness runs Friday and Saturday at 9 PM. Spirits With The Spirits now runs as a private booking for groups; inquire to set a date. Both walk the historic downtown core, so parking once covers either.

Can a 19-year-old join the pub crawl?

No. The crawl stops at working bars, so 21+ is firm. At 18 you are welcome on Mountain Town of Madness, which carries the darker material without the bar stops, and the family walk at 7 PM stays open to everyone.
