The National Register nomination for Sloppy Joe's Bar at 201 Duval, reference 06000957, listed 1 November 2006, records that the original bar stood "one block away at 428 Greene Street" and footnotes the address "Now Captain Tony's Saloon". It gives the official legal opening as 5 December 1933, the day Prohibition was repealed, names the Prohibition-era aliases the Blind Pig and the Silver Slipper, and dates the new Duval Street bar's opening to 5 May 1937. The Key West Citizen of 9 February 1937 supplies contemporaneous proof, advertising a dance at "Sloppy Joe's Bar on Greene street".

What the record does not carry at that address is the hanging tree. No execution record, court record, newspaper account or federal document turned up in our research placing a single hanging at 428 Greene Street, and the National Register nomination mentions no hanging, no hanging tree, no ice house and no morgue. The only published counts with any provenance are 18 and "at least 75", neither of them sourced, so we print none. The rest of the stop's circulating material fails the same way: there was no wireless telegraph station here and no USS Maine dispatch, since Browne dates the International Ocean Telegraph Company's line to 1866 and lands the cable in front of the army barracks on the north side of the island, and the hurricane in these stories is the 11 October 1846 one, not an 1865 storm.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 401 Duval is four churches on one lot inside eighty years: a coral rock church begun in 1838 and taken by the 1846 hurricane; a frame church of 1848, consecrated 4 January 1851, burned in the citywide Great Fire of 30 March 1886; a wood church of 1887 destroyed by the 11 October 1909 hurricane; and the present concrete church, first service 8 June 1919. This operator's own page says the church was established in 1832 by John Fleming, that he donated land, contributed significant funds and personally recruited clergy, and that his grave carries an imposing monument. John William Charles Fleeming died on 19 December 1832, four days before the first clergyman reached the island, the land came from his widow on 5 May 1838, and the parish and marker 92 both say the burial site is unknown. The same operator has families sheltering inside through the 1846 hurricane and calls the first church wooden when it was coral rock.

La Concha at 430 Duval opened on January 22, 1926, and the source for that is Key West Historic Marker 12, which is a private nonprofit's marker-program page rather than a government marker. It records Carl Aubuchon starting construction in 1925, a short-lived labor strike, $768,000 to build plus $130,000 on furnishings, rooms at $3.00 a night, and the sale and renaming to the Key West Colonial Hotel within six months of the 1929 crash. It records nothing about the roof suicides, the tallest-building claim or the 1980s elevator-shaft story that this operator's own page carries. On Tennessee Williams, the Key West Art and Historical Society, which runs his museum, says only that it is believed he wrote the final draft of A Streetcar Named Desire at the hotel in 1947, while the hotel's own timeline files the stay under 1946, so the hedge stays.
