El Campo Santo Cemetery, 2410 San Diego Avenue, is California Historical Landmark No. 68, registered 6 December 1932, and historically the Catholic Cemetery. The first burial was Juan Adams in 1849, which makes it San Diego's second oldest cemetery after the Presidio ground, on Laurie Bissell's 1982 account in the Journal of San Diego History. The landmark text states flatly that between 1849 and 1897, 477 persons were buried in these grounds, and it names Antonio Garra the most eminent of many Native Americans interred here; it is Bissell rather than the landmark who adds that Garra led the Garra uprising and was executed and buried here in 1852.
This operator's own published history of the cemetery carries three claims the record does not support. First the date: the company writes that a horse drawn streetcar line was built through part of the cemetery in 1889 and paved over in 1942, where Landmark No. 68 says a street railway bisected it in 1894, and this program found no source at all for 1889 or 1942. Second the count: the company's page says as many as 18 graves lie under the street and the brand's page says an estimated 18 to 20, but the 1994 Historical Shrine Foundation plaque on the wall, transcribed word for word by two independent transcribers, remembers the more than 20 Men, Women and Children who lie buried beneath San Diego Ave. Third the 477: the brand's page writes that only 477 of the original graves are still visible, but 477 is the number buried, and the San Diego History Center recorded in 1982 that exactly one original marker survived, alongside six from the 1933 restoration.
Two smaller ones. The closing date is disputed, 1897 on the landmark and 1880 at the History Center, so we write from 1849 and attribute any end date. And the cemetery is not inside Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, which the brand's page places it in.
The Whaley House Museum, 2476 San Diego Ave, is California Historical Landmark No. 65, registered the same day, 6 December 1932. It is owned by the County of San Diego and, per the county's own page, managed and operated by Old Town Trolley Tours, this product's own parent company. James Robinson, known as Yankee Jim, was convicted of grand larceny on 18 August 1852 and hanged on Saturday 18 September 1852; California State Parks writes that Yankee Jim was hung on the ground upon which the Whaley House now stands. The house followed in 1856 to 1857. The county seat moved to New Town in 1871, and the Old Town courthouse burned on 20 April 1872.
The standard telling gets three things wrong here too. Robinson was not a horse thief, a description the museum's own site carries; the offense tried was grand larceny over a boat, and which boat is contested. He was never tried for murder. And the claim of a federal designation as the most haunted house in America is not documented anywhere in this research. What the federal record holds is a service mark, AMERICA'S MOST HAUNTED HOUSE, serial 90828658, filed on 14 July 2021 by Historic Tours of America, this product's own supplier, and registered on 6 December 2022 on the Supplemental Register with HAUNTED HOUSE disclaimed. That is a finding about a mark rather than about a building, and it is not the origin of the legend. The Life magazine attribution is unresolved rather than refuted.
Two connections this route does not have. California State Parks also has Robinson buried at El Campo Santo, this tour's other stop, but the San Diego Union of 25 February 1894 puts his grave outside the wall. And the Villa Montezuma is not on this route: that museum's own stewards date the end of this trolley's Villa stop to February 2006.
