What you will see

The walk opens at 43 Church Street, where Turner's Seafood trades under the Lyceum Hall name. The Salem Lyceum formed in January 1830 and opened its hall on this lot on January 19, 1831, though that wood-frame building later burned and the brick one standing now replaced it. Nathaniel Hawthorne booked its 1848 and 1849 seasons as corresponding secretary, bringing in Emerson, Thoreau and Daniel Webster (Salem State University Archives). On February 12, 1877 Alexander Graham Bell gave the first public demonstration of long-distance telephony from the Lyceum stage, Thomas Watson answering from the Boston Globe (Library of Congress). The address is sold as Bridget Bishop's, hanged June 10, 1692, and that story is largely a mix-up: the tavern, the shovel-board and the red bodice belong to Sarah Bishop of Salem Village, not Bridget of Salem Town. Charles Upham conflated them in 1867; David L. Greene corrected it in The American Genealogist in 1981. Bishop's house stood near 71 Washington Street; the Salem Witch Museum places only her orchard land here.

The Witch House at 310 1/2 Essex Street is named for a judge, not for anyone accused. Jonathan Corwin bought it unfinished in 1675, sat on the Court of Oyer and Terminer in 1692, and died in the house in 1718, never punished. The federal Historic American Buildings Survey record states that the court he served on sentenced nineteen people to death (HABS No. MA-398). No witch lived in the house and no trial was held in it. The accused were not examined inside either: the Salem Witch Museum says no evidence supports it, and the documented venues were the Salem Village and Salem Town meeting houses (History of Massachusetts). The building has also moved: citizens raised about $42,000 in 1944 to save it from a road widening, and in the winter of 1945 it was shifted about 35 feet and restored (Salem Public Library).

Ropes Mansion at 318 Essex Street carries two documented deaths and two durable errors. Judge Nathaniel Ropes bought the house, built about 1727, in 1768. He renounced the Crown salary that had made the court a target on February 8, 1774, and died on March 18, 1774, recorded in Salem's death register at 48 (Vital Records of Salem, Volume VI). The tour version puts a mob at his windows the night before, furious about that salary. He had surrendered it five weeks earlier, the earliest death notices mention no mob, and the story reaches print decades later as family tradition (Boston 1775). Abigail Pickman Ropes died of burns on April 23, 1839, aged 42. She was not the judge's wife, a different Abigail entirely. The one-acre garden behind it, laid out by John Robinson in 1912 and 1913, is open free (Peabody Essex Museum).

Three stops close the route. The Salem Athenaeum at 337 Essex Street began as plunder: on September 5, 1780 the Beverly privateer Pilgrim took a British vessel carrying the scientific library of the Irish chemist Richard Kirwan, and 116 of those volumes were auctioned in Salem on April 12, 1781 (Salem Public Library). Nathaniel Bowditch, an 18-year-old apprentice, gained access in 1791 and taught himself navigation from them (New England Historical Society). Hawthorne read at the Athenaeum but never in this building, which opened in 1907 (Salem Athenaeum). The Salem Inn's West House at 7 Summer Street was built in 1834 for Captain Nathaniel West and joined the National Register in 1983 (NRHP nomination). Elizabeth Derby West, the woman usually named in its haunted Room 17, divorced West in 1806 and died about twenty years before the house existed. The John Ward House at 9 Brown Street, a National Historic Landmark since November 24, 1968, was rolled on ox-drawn logs three blocks in 1910 when the county wanted its lot for a jail; no accused person was examined in it, and its federal nomination never mentions 1692 (NRHP and NHL nomination). Wicked Good Books, the seventh stop, turned up no documented history in our research.
