Tolomato Cemetery at 14 Cordova Street is Catholic ground owned by the diocese. A Guale mission village was resettled on it after the town burned in 1702, and cemetery-only use begins in 1777, when Fr. Pedro Camps obtained the British governor's leave to bury his Minorcan parishioners there (preservation association). Georges Biassou, a commander of the 1791 Haitian Revolution who later served Spain, died in St. Augustine on 13 July 1801 and was buried here, though the grave is unlocated and unmarked. Augustin Verot, the first Bishop of St. Augustine, died on 10 June 1876; his remains moved from the chapel vault to the memorial tomb at the center of the cemetery on 22 January 1988 (diocesan archives). Burials ceased in 1884, when the city closed every cemetery inside its limits over yellow fever fears. The boy said to have fallen from a tree here is folklore until somebody produces a record: the versions disagree, and no tree is tied to a death.
Spanish Street is the connective stretch between the two cemeteries, and it earns its place on the route rather than on a plaque. After Carolina forces burned the town in 1702, the federal record says rebuilding followed mainly along St. George and Spanish Streets, and from 1777 the blocks just inside the City Gate stayed the Minorcan Quarter well into the nineteenth century (NRHP 70000847). Worth knowing as you walk it: most of the colonial-looking buildings on the pedestrian block one street east were reconstructed between 1962 and 1980 and are classed non-contributing in the federal inventory for exactly that reason.
The Huguenot Cemetery, a half-acre outside the Old City Gate, was set aside in 1821 during that year's yellow fever epidemic as the public burying ground for the new territory's Protestants. The Presbyterian church has owned it since 1832, and interments ended in 1884 (Florida Department of State). Its anchor figure is John B. Stickney, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, who died in Washington on 5 November 1882; the Washington paper of the next morning gives the cause as pneumonia, not yellow fever and not typhoid (Evening Star), and B. Frank Leeds recorded his nine to ten foot marble monument in a complete 1892 survey. The gold-teeth exhumation story attached to him is unsourced folklore, and no Huguenots are buried here at all. Docents open the yard on the third Saturday of the month, 11 to 2, and the rest of the time it is read from the fence.
