The Hutchings, Sealy and Company Buildings at 2328 Strand are Nicholas J. Clayton's work, built for Ball, Hutchings and Co in 1895 and 1896: two adjoining structures made to read as one, in granite, red Texas sandstone and buff terra cotta, with the dates 1854 and 1895 set in the stonework (Handbook of Texas). The bank itself was reorganized as Hutchings, Sealy and Co in 1897, two years after the building went up. The Merchants Mutual Insurance Company Building at 2319 Strand is a rebuild, and its dates matter. Flake's Daily Bulletin reported the first building finished on July 8, 1869, and the Moro Castle fire of December 3, 1869 destroyed it along with the block, at losses generally estimated at about $1,500,000 (Daily Phoenix, December 16, 1869). Rebuilding was under way by March 1870 and Merchants Mutual had ceased operations by 1874, which is enough to sink any ghost story that has the firm handling 1900 storm claims from this address.

Hendley Market at 2010 Strand sits inside Hendley Row, 2000 to 2016 Strand, begun in 1855 and, on the longer marker transcription, first brick laid in 1858 and completed in 1859. The marker's claim is worth quoting at its own scope: the oldest surviving commercial structure on the Strand. The row is four buildings behind one facade, separated by fire walls, and became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1981. The cupola that made the row a Civil War lookout is gone, and the surviving accounts of the battle damage disagree about where it is and about what caused it, so nobody should promise you a cannonball you can put a finger in.

Saengerfest Park at 2302 Strand, on the Tremont corner, is a modern park with an old name. George and Cynthia Mitchell created it in the early 1990s and the Galveston Historical Foundation owns it. The name is the history: Galveston hosted the state Saengerfest in 1881, in a pavilion built for it by Clayton at 21st Street and the beachfront, the first public building in the city lit entirely by electricity, and that building burned in August 1883. Nothing on this corner survives from 1881. The Grand 1894 Opera House at 2020 Postoffice Street carries the year it was built rather than the year it opened: it opened on January 3, 1895, the 1900 storm took its roof, auditorium, stagehouse and east wall, and it reopened on October 14, 1901, thirteen months later.

Two corrections ride along. The Grand is not inside the Strand Historic District, and the National Historic Landmark designation belongs to that district as a whole, so no building on the walk is individually a landmark. The Railroad Museum, where you meet, runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so an evening group gathers outside a closed building.

Two hours on foot for $34.99, adults only at 21, capped at 30. It is the joint most expensive walking tour in our Galveston set, and only the Segway product costs more. Be clear-eyed about the format: this is a walk built around bars, not a package with drinks in it.
