Charleston's haunted geography is unusually concentrated. The churchyards sit right against the sidewalks and the harbor holds forts whose stories start before the Revolution, so a single evening on foot covers an enormous amount of documented history.

The dated record behind the ghost stories

Charles Town was a port before it was anything else. Yellow fever came in with the shipping: the South Carolina Encyclopedia records that the first major epidemic struck Charleston in 1699, killing about fifteen percent of the population. Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet blockaded the port for a week in mid-May 1718, and Bonnet was hanged on December 10, 1718, at White Point, now the Battery.

The address most routes are built around has a park service file behind it. Per the National Park Service, the Exchange and Custom House was built from 1767 to 1771, confiscated tea was stored there in 1774 after a protest meeting against the Tea Act, and the British used the basement as a military prison during the Revolutionary War. Restored, it is the Provost Dungeon. The slave trade is the heavier chapter, formally acknowledged and apologized for in 2018.

The 1886 earthquake is the event guides keep returning to. The Southern Christian Advocate printed its editor's first-hand account on September 9, 1886: a shock at Summerville at 8:30 on Friday morning, August 27, another at 4:35 the next morning, then the one that emptied the town into its own streets on the evening of Tuesday, August 31. "The house seemed jumping up and down, and swaying in every direction like a ship at sea in a great storm," he wrote, in the issue held by the Library of Congress. By daylight nearly every chimney in Summerville was down and two people were dead, and published USGS work supports a moment magnitude estimate of 7.3.
