Flagstaff’s Train Depot, Flagstaff Amtrak
Flagstaff’s history is inextricably tied to the coming of the railroad and the town’s location along the Atlantic-Pacific railway in 1887. In the 1870s, the Anglo inhabitants of this mountain settlement were mainly ranchers and sheepherders. Northern Arizona had clean air, plenty of green grassland, water and a temperate climate–but it was also isolated by its geography. When the A-P came through–followed immediately by the lumber mill–it bought the beginnings of civilization into the area. After a series of boxcars served as a railroad station, the current depot was built in 1926. As almost every historic building in town it’s been through several facelifts. Amtrak shares the space with the Flagstaff Visitors Center and you’re always welcome to come inside and take a look around.
