Museum of Northern Arizona
A few miles north of downtown Flagstaff, off of Fort Valley Road, sits the Museum of Northern Arizona. This world-renown, multi-facted institution was the vision of zoologist Harold Colton and his artist wife, Mary-Russell. Dedicated to preserving the indigenous culture and history of the Colorado Plaateau, MNA has navigated the decades by staying true to its mission and partnering with the community.
The Coltons were fascinated by the rich colors and spiraling rock formations that defined Northern Arizona. They made frequent trips to the area before deciding to move here from Philadelphia in 1926. The couple immediately set to work putting together a museum-–which was first housed downtown at the Flagstaff’s Womens Club in 1928. The Coltons also worked to finish their home,Coyote Range, which was located close to MNA’ s permanent site. The Museum opened its doors circa 1935 and immediately attracted scientists, botanists, geologists and artists from around the world. Both Coyote Range and the Museum of Northern Arizona remain vital, living institutions that educate visitors as well as preserve and curate the wondrous environment of our region.
